UNFORGETTABLE

Old Works has a number of signature holes. The Seventh, named the heap, is one that many players believe should be designated the signature hole. This par 3 features an elevated tee on a hillside of slag that plays to a green surrounded by slag (sand). The hole will play from 121 yards to 238 yards depending on which set of tees you play. From the tee looking beyond the green, players will have a great view of historic Anaconda, and its beautiful mountain setting.

TESTER

The 11th hole is a par 5 that plays up to 597 yards long. The hole features a waste bunker along the left side for a good portion of the holes entire length. The key to playing this hole well is to avoid this waste bunker. The second shot should favor the right portion of the fairway, as the bunker will collect balls played up the middle of the left side of the fairway. A good second shot will put the player in a position for an approach into a very shallow green fronted by Warm Springs Creek and a deep bunker guarding the right side. The mounding behind the green makes a little more club, if needed, the wise choice here.

DIRECTIONS

Turning off I-90 at Exit 208 proceed west on Highway 1 six miles to Anaconda. At Cedar Street turn north (right) to Pizzini, turn right (east) and follow signs to the course.

Jack Nicklaus incorporated many remnants of Anaconda's historic copper smelter into the design of Old Works. The most prominent being the black slag, sand, a by-product of the copper smelting process, which is incorporated in all the course bunkers. The Old Works opened in May of 1997 and is quickly building a reputation as one of the Northwest's most unique and challenging courses. In 1998 both Golf and Golf Digest Magazines selected Old Works to their Top Ten Best New Course lists, and in May of 1999 Golf Digest listed Old Works as the states top course.

What should players think about on the tee? - STEVE WICKLIFFE

The first thing players most often think about when they get a driver in their hands is how far they want to hit it. When in fact players should remember that scoring is made much easier from the fairway. Next time you're out playing, focus on putting the ball in play first off the tee and see if this does not help lower your score.
