UNFORGETTABLE

Hole #12 is a 136 yard par three played from a tee 100 feet above the green. From the tee you have a beautiful panoramic view of North Spokane. The green is shaped like a three-leaf clover, which gently slopes from the back left to the front right. The two areas to avoid on #12 are the bunker, and going long. Balls that go long will leave a very difficult chip back uphill to the green, which is ten feet above the player and runs away. The best bet on twelve is to hit for the center of the green and play for a two-putt and maybe you'll get lucky and score a birdie.

TESTER

Hole #11 is a sharp dogleg right that plays 390 yards from the blue tees. The hole doglegs around a heavily treed, natural hill that devours golf balls. The tee wants to point you toward the corner of the dogleg, and away from the fat part of the green. Whole long hitters can play for the corner and sometimes get a wedge shot to the green, the wide play is to play down the left side of the fairway and take the mid-iron shot that will avoid the hazard of the hillside. In tournament play at Esmeralda, No. 11 always exacts the most "big numbers".

DIRECTIONS

From I-90 take the Thor-Freya exit and continue north. Proceed approx. 3 miles to Euclid just past the Spokane River and the Greene Street Bridge. Turn right on Euclid and proceed 5 blocks to Freya and turn left. Proceed 2 blocks to a sign on the right directing you to the clubhouse on Courtland Street.

Esmeralda is an easy course on which to break 100, but a difficult course on which to break par. We have generous tree-lined fairways, no water hazards, and few bunkers. This fact makes the course fun for new golfers because they are not going to lose golf balls and deal with a lot of forced carries. Our large, challenging greens put a premium on club selection and putting. Good players must demonstrate exact control with their irons to create realistic birdie putts to have a chance to shoot under par.

How can we play a 4-hour round? - BILL WARNER

The thing I stress most to new golfers is that golf is a game played from point A to point B. As long as the player is progressing from one point to the other, slow play is rarely a problem. The thing that bothers me as a player when I see it is when players decide to backtrack toward point A after they have already been there. If all players would concentrate on moving through the course without going backwards, four hour rounds would be a lot more common.
